Before talking about success, it is necessary to know what success is and what the definition is. What is success? This question reminds me of my lecture tour to the Philippines at the end of 1996. During my stay in Manila, one day the local Chinese leader Mr. Tung Shang-chen and commercial magnate Mr. Chang made a special arrangement for me to visit then Philippine Vice-president Joseph Estrada and his wife. After carefully judging Mr. Estrada’s walking posture, palm-lines, signature, face and voice, I announced that he could be the next president of the Philippines. While discussing about success, Mr. Estrada said by quoting a great Western philosopher’s saying: “Success is goal.” I am very much in agreement with this definition: having reached the goal is the mark of success. B.The Goal Should you want to succeed, you must first of all set up your goal. In term of goal, there are 2 categories: one is to set up the goal according to personal longing and needs while the other is to establish based on social ideology and social norms. In the form of set-up, it is also classified as conscious and unconscious. For instance, the goal set up for wish and need is unconscious. In general, personal goal is relatively easy to reach and personal success is recognized variously according to the content of the goal. The goal established on social ideology and social norms, however, is variable and in pace with times. Once the goal is reached, the success is recognized by the society. It should be pointed out that there are many other goals which cannot be classified in detail but in different proportions either in consciousness, unconsciousness or in social norms and personal needs. For instance, you want to be a billionaire or a leader in academic circles; you want to be healthy or marrying a beauty; you want to be wealthy or socially well-known; you want to be a famous performer or a respected scientist; and so on, all are within the scale of your personal goals.
