THE CRYSTAL BALL A Powerful Talisman In Traditional Chinese Culture The crystal ball is generally welcomed in every household, but for the crystal to give comfort, success and health, it must be cleansed, blessed, energized and hung in the proper position. On a late autumn night in 1986 in Beijing, with a few pedestrians strolling the streets, a group of armed guards gathered in the west part of Tiananmen Square. Inside the corridor of the Great Hall of the People, the decorated lamps shone brilliantly on the bright marble floor. At this moment, China's Premier Zhao Ziyang was meeting important foreign guests at the Zhejiang Hall. Except for his secretary, none of the staff were allowed to enter the meeting room. They were requested to wait in the petty parlor on either side of the main hall.
![]() Slowly Lee Jianjun became completely oblivious to his surroundings. The only thing he could sense was a warm flicker of light that left him with a comfortable feeling. He opened his eyes and looked straight towards the light source: the reflections from the crystal balls hanging from the chandeliers. He felt that the surrounding magnetic energy field combined so smoothly with his own distinctive power that it was proof the crystal balls did have a remarkable effect. The realization reminded him of something that had occurred one year earlier. In the spring of 1985, Premier Zhao Ziyang attended the 3rd Conference of the 6th National People's Congress during which he made a report on economic reforms. In spite of being 66 years of age, the Premier was fully occupied with state affairs day and night. Because of his work load, the Premier found his eyesight was suffering as a result. But eye specialists could not figure out what had caused this serious deteriorating condition. With the Premier scheduled to visit Britain, Germany and the Netherlands in the coming June, Lee Jianjun suggested that a pair of tea-colored crystal glasses be made for the Premier. The authorities agreed and soon a hexagon crystal was found in Donghai County. It was sent to Suzhou City for refining and polishing. To make sure the job was done properly, Lee Jianjun made a special trip there from Beijing to supervise the process. In a few days, 3 pairs of tea-colored glasses, made of natural crystal and energized by Lee Jianjun using his qigong power, were brought back to Beijing for the Premier. Soon after Premier Zhao put on a pair of these glasses, his eye strain disappeared and the neuralgia he had suffered for many years showed instant improvement. To show his gratefulness, the Premier selected a pair of these glasses and presented them to Lee Jianjun as a gift. After Lee Jianjun made the crystal glasses for the Premier, he soon forgot about them. However, the light reflection at the Great Hall of the People made him think once again about the crystal balls. So, Lee Jianjun quietly removed some crystal balls from the hall and began his own research. The crystal ball has consequently become one of his tools used to solve mysteries in the research on human system engineering science. Crystal is a kind of quartz spar which has 7 degrees in Mohshardness, 2.65 in proportion and 1.54-1.55 in reflection rate. It glitters and glows with a double reflection rate of 0.009. Like other minerals, crystal is formed over thousands of years underground and most of them are found in volcano beds. There, under high pressure and with the combination of silicon and oxygen, crystals form dioxide silicon. According to modern geological surveys, there are crystals under one-third of the earth's surface. Mixing in other
minerals causes crystals to possess a variety of brilliant colors. Besides
transparent crystal, many different kinds of quartz are classified as
amethyst, topaz, emerald, citrine, smoky quartz and rosy quartz.
"(Crystal's) Color varies according to the background,For more than 5,000 years, crystal has been utilized by human beings. The ancient masterpiece The Record of History (Shi Yi Ji), written in the Zhou Dynasty, mentioned that during the era of Emperor Zhou, people were using quartz to decorate the Kunzhao Platform. During the period of the Warring States, rings made of crystal were carved with great delicacy. Ancient Buddhism considered the colorful light of crystal as "Buddhist Light" and regarded the crystal as having magic power that could protect human being as well. "Thou hast the color of cold ice. But dust to thee can never be attached." Praised in this ancient poem, crystal has been widely used in decorative articles by all dynasties throughout the ages. The Gypsy, or Romany, fortune-tellers not only used the magic power of crystal to tell the future, but also to concentrate their thoughts on opening their "Eyes of the Minds". The renowned ancient Chinese doctor Li Shizhen in his medical dictionary Compendium of Meteria Medica (Ben Cao Gang Mu) described the nature of crystal like this: "Through the sun, crystal sparkles with colorful rays of light. Crystal is quite effective as a sedative, a swelling subsidence for reducing internal heat, relieving inflammation or fever and is good for the eyes as well." As a traditional medicine, crystal is also good for eye disease and hair nutrition. If used often, crystal can even preserve one's health and prolong human life. Lee Jianjun hung the transparent crystal balls he removed from the Great Hall of the People in different corners and at different heights in his living room. He closely observed the crystals day and night in all kinds of weather, and placed them inside and outside his living room. This experiment continued for exactly one year until Lee Jianjun reached a conclusion. On November 9th, 1987, Lee Jianjun wrote in his book The General Outline of Human System Engineering Science: "The crystal ball not only possesses inspirations of both heaven and earth, but also contains a special distinctive power and vibration. Through special cleansing and blessing, the transparent and purple rose quartz with a surface of 100 cuts will sparkle with colorful rays, which are strong enough to drive off the invasion of negative ions. As a result, it is a very effective indoor medium that wards off hidden dangers and ensures health and happiness in the family and prosperity and protection in business." Neil Ivan, a crystal research specialist, discovered that when the original crystal stone comes into contact with other magnetic energy fields, it sends out vibrations at different frequencies. Lee Jianjun, from his own research, also discovered that though natural crystal stone has a strong and generous state from its magnetic field which is compatible with that of human beings, a complete and pure crystal stone without any cracks is very rare. A slight impurity or crack in the natural crystal will produce an intermission pause or confuse the direction of the energy field while vibrating toward the human body. It is also unable to effectively prevent the entering of negative ions. It is, therefore, quite difficult to make crystal balls out of natural crystal stones and to guarantee effectiveness as well. In order to solve these problems, Lee Jianjun made use of artificial crystals. He summed up a set of scientific data for man-made crystal balls and established a practical theory for making, as well as using, man-made crystals. The artificial crystal, mainly based on natural crystal stone, is made from a mixture of several mineral elements, such as lead oxide and carbonic acid, under a temperature of 1,400C. Through experiments, Lee Jianjun confirmed that an artificial crystal with more than 100 cut surfaces, containing over 30% lead, is more transparent and pure than natural crystals. Through a special cleaning process of cold storage, sun-bathing and washing as well as storing in a natural gaseous state and being energized with his distinctive qigong power, the artificial crystal ball is more effective than natural crystal, especially when it is hung properly under a natural light source by a window. In this way, the crystal ball can produce the results that people have prayed for. At the beginning, Lee Jianjun hung up the crystal balls at Zhongnanhai, a working and residential compound for China's leaders and their families. Soon, the crystal balls became popular among government leaders and high ranking officials. The marshals praised them as "The Balls of Longevity and Peaceful Mind" and many of them hung the balls in their homes both as a decoration and as a talisman. In the spring of 1988, a general who had been suffering from old wounds, and had been feeling weak and depressed, requested treatment from Lee Jianjun. At the time the central government was holding a meeting at Western Hill near Beijing, Lee Jianjun took time to pay a visit to the old general. Through his perspective viewing power, Lee Jianjun found out that, except for the old wounds, the general did not have any serious disease and even the wounds posed no threat to his health. Lee Jianjun, therefore, told the general with certainty that the problem bothering him was coming from his house. Stunned by his words, the general immediately led Lee Jianjun to his car and drove him to his residence in downtown Beijing. An hour later, they reached the general's residence at Jingshan Houjie. Because of the general's hard-working and plain-living life style, the whole house was cluttered with all kinds of things. The furniture was old and simple, supplied by the military several decades before. Within a few minutes, Lee Jianjun discovered that it was the messy state of the residence that caused the worsening condition to the general's health. He requested the general to clear up everything, to rearrange the interior decoration and to buy new furniture. Lee Jianjun then hung up a crystal ball by the window facing south. Hours later, the whole house was clean, tidy and bright. Upon seeing the result, the general became so excited that he began walking around the house without even noticing that his decades-long pains were gone. Within hours, the old general had regained his strength and felt in high spirits. He proposed a toast to Lee Jianjun at dinner with profound emotion, holding up a glass of alcohol that he had been unable to drink for many years. At the request of the general, Lee Jianjun also hung up a crystal ball in his office. Soon after that, the general resumed his duty at Zhongnanhai and has been quite busy with state affairs ever since. The crystal balls made by Lee Jianjun have gained fame and Lee Jianjun's name has since become well-known all over the country. Lee Jianjun now has a reputation not only for having his own style of geomancy practice, but also for introducing a unique fashion in interior decoration. Modern interior decorations nowadays use fashionable materials to show off affluence and individual styles. To prevent bad luck, some people prefer to hang an Eight-Diagram chart, the 8 combinations of 3 whole or broken lines formerly used in divination, in their homes. But the Eight-Diagram chart may make visitors feel uncomfortable and look inappropriate with modern decoration. A crystal ball, however, shows no trace of blessing , but conforms well with all kinds of decorations. It is both beautiful and practical. Another example of the effectiveness of the crystal balls can be seen in Singapore: Tan's Law Firm Building is situated at the bottom of the beautiful Bukit Timah Hill. It was during the peak of Tan's career when he purchased and moved into this new building. This independent 3-storey building, designed by a famous architect, looks solemn and luxurious. The outside black-and-white color shows a vivid contrastive structure and the inside is clean, bright and impressive. However, Tan's business dropped drastically after he moved into the building. Knowing well it was the problem of geomancy, Tan sought advice from geomancers in Hong Kong and Taiwan. All these geomancers pointed out similarly that the building's interior decoration, though fortunate for some businesses, was not inviting to legal-advice-seekers. Tan followed their suggestions and hung an Eight-Diagram chart, Chinese writing brushes and xiao, Chinese vertical bamboo flutes, on the wall. He also installed a large fish tank in the building. Half a year later, the number of clients increased but Tan's Law Firm Building had become a laughing object, with the ground floor nick-named "the Aquarium", the 2nd floor as "the Folk Art Palace" and the 3rd floor as "Geomancy Court". Besides, the building's interior designer complained that Tan had rearranged his art design and showed no respect for his work. Upon hearing about Lee Jianjun's reputation, Tan immediately invited him to Singapore to consult with him. After a few minutes' looking around, Lee Jianjun ordered the removal of the Eight-Diagram chart, the writing brushes, the xiao flutes and the fish tank and, instead, he hung up a single crystal ball in Tan's office. Since that day, Tan has regained his dignity and his office has become increasingly busier. Even the interior designer has spoken highly of Lee Jianjun's crystal ball and describes it a highlight of his whole design concept. The utilization of the crystal ball in modern geomancy has become a social phenomenon. Crystal balls are widely accepted and welcomed by the people in Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South-East Asia. Some people in Taiwan respect crystal balls as they would a God and have many hanging in their houses. Some people in Hong Kong bow to crystal balls when they see them, some sleep with them and others even talk to the balls when they have problems. In some South-Eastern Asian countries, cab drivers hang crystal balls in their cabs for safe driving. While talking about this social phenomenon, Master Lee Jianjun points out that the hanging of the crystal ball in a car is in fact quite dangerous, because the irregularity of energy flow caused by the swinging of the ball disturbs the mind and diverts the attention of the driver. Though many drivers come to Master Lee Jianjun offering a high price for a crystal ball, he refuses to sell. Regarding the crystal balls, Master Lee Jianjun reaffirms: "To have an effective crystal ball for protection, health and safety, the key is that the ball has to be cleaned, blessed and energized as well as hung in a proper position." Not all crystal balls have effective and beneficial powers. For example, in crystal producing areas or crystal processing plants, the people there do not benefit from the balls. A powerful crystal ball must go through a period of 7 days of cold storage and high temperature in order to rid it of its crude energy and impurities. Furthermore, it has to be sunbathed, supplemented with pure energy from nature and, according to different wishes, energized by Master Lee Jianjun. The hanging position is also very important. An improperly placed or mishandled ball will not be effective. To be so, a ball has to be able to combine daylight and the magnetic field as well as change the direction of harmful energy vibrations so as to produce a beneficial environment with a regular energy release. The hanging position, therefore, becomes an invisible converging point and an important energy starter in the whole environment. Though seemingly unimportant, it is a vital point. The following is a good example: After receiving a crystal ball from Master Lee Jianjun, a senior minister in the Chinese government successfully got rid of all his troubles and worries. He worked energetically in his office while, at home, he practiced calligraphy and drawing in his free time. His comfortable and happy life, however, made him think of his son far away in his native home. With the purpose of sharing his happiness with his son, the minister asked for a crystal ball from Master Lee Jianjun as a present and went south to his hometown. It was a warm spring in the south. The minister's old home, having just been renovated, was located between a mountain and a lake. Soon after the minister arrived, he carefully selected a window facing the mountain to the south and hung up the crystal ball. Having done this, the minister told his son's family stories about Master Lee Jianjun as well as explained the mysterious powers of the crystal ball. While listening, his son noticed his father's face turned pale and looked tired. Thinking it was fatigue from the long trip, the minister was persuaded to take an early rest. But over the following 3 days, the minister became unable to stand on his feet, he lost his appetite and felt weaker and weaker and medicines could not help. All of sudden, the minister realized that this strange state must be related to the crystal ball. He immediately placed a telephone-call to Beijing and described the situation to Master Lee Jianjun. Master Lee Jianjun questioned him about the hanging position and direction. The minister replied: "It's facing Mount Wolf by the south window." Upon hearing this, Master Lee Jianjun immediately told the minister to take down the crystal ball and said: "Sir, but you were born in the Year of the Goat!" Little did the general realize that he had been inviting "the Wolf into the Goat Pen"! This story suggests that any magic powers have to be handled professionally and properly. Master Lee Jianjun's
crystal balls have become a talisman in modern families as well as a
fashion object in decoration. The ancient Roman nobles enjoyed cool days
in the summer by placing precious crystal balls in their homes and the
Chinese emperors gained composure by sitting in front of the crystal vases
when they felt agitated. Master Lee Jianjun, however, has achieved great
success in making the past serve the present by applying the crystal's
magical effects to ordinary families, as well as in making a contribution
to modern interior decoration.
